Treatment optionsEach year, American couples undergo more than 100,000 assisted reproduction procedures. Most infertility cases are treated with conventional medical therapies such as medication or surgery, although techniques such as ovarian stimulation followed by in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), can increase the chances of success. The treatment option your doctor suggests for you is based on your fertility condition. For example, women who are diagnosed as anovulatory (do not ovulate) may be treated with ovulation induction therapies, while couples whose infertility condition is thought to be due to factors that result in insufficient numbers of sperm reaching the woman’s uterus may initially be treated with intrauterine insemination (IUI). Researching and understanding your treatment takes work but it is essential that you know as much as possible. The more information you are armed with the more in control you will feel. No one can predict the outcome of a treatment but it is important to maintain a positive attitude. Try not to enter treatment feeling that it won't work. This section explains in detail various treatment options such as ovulation induction, assisted reproductive procedures (ART), ICSI, IUI and egg donation. As with any medical treatment, it is important to speak to your doctor or a nurse about any concerns or questions you and your partner may have.
