What to expect
The information below outlines what you can probably expect from your first few visits to a clinic. Keep in mind that clinics’ procedures vary.
- Attend information sessions
Many assisted reproductive technology (ART) clinics have patient information sessions that include slides and/or videos that help potential patients understand what’s ahead in terms of treatments and results. These may be group or one-on-one sessions with a physician or a nurse coordinator.
Make an application
The couple makes a formal application to the program and pertinent medical records are forwarded to the program director and the rest of the team.
Take routine tests
Routine blood tests and cervical cultures will be updated, if necessary. Special semen analysis may be required. Most programs involve counselors on either an optional or a mandatory basis as part of the acceptance process. ART can be an emotionally charged experience, and psychological services are actually quite important in supporting patients, and assisting them in coping with the stresses associated with these therapies.
